In the United Kingdom, African women, who are refugees and asylum seekers have no opportunities to become self-sufficient, hence there is a dependency on charity or welfare for their basic survival. The loses of being self-supporting denied them the opportunities of having self-confidence, it also deprives them of their pride of accomplishment. Living in these demotivated conditions could lead to negative effects psychologically, socially and even mentally.

AWEF empowerment process seek to give African Women, Refugees and Asylum Seekers and their children the power of making decisions on their own, through having access to information and resources that will enhance them in making proper decision, grant them options from which they can make choices for themselves, then having the abilities to exercise assertiveness within collective decision-making processes and allowing them to make changes in their lives through positive thinking, long with provide the opportunities for our women to learn skills for improving themselves, change others’ perceptions through democratic means.

Our Process

Our empowerment process is about allowing our African women, Refugees and Asylum Seekers to gain knowledge, skills and attitude needed to cope up with their life situations that are due to circumstances outside of their own controls. AWEF feels that Empowerment is a critical part of the development needed for Africans who are women, refugees and asylum seekers in the United Kingdom.

The continuous processes in empowering our women will ultimately lead to our women having the abilities to fend for themselves in a time of life when their destinies are not clear, this process will help them to put food on their tables, reduce deprivations and destitutions through their own efforts and contributions to work.

How we help

The African Women Empowerment Forum core works contribute to the empowerment process with an objective to break the barriers that prevent development, so that these women are educated, have skills, and can use those skills for work, do business and provide solutions so that the day to day struggles that these women faces can be minimise. This process will further contribute to removing the needs of dependency on state and other supporting organisations for life basic necessities.
